Something about the experiences I have had in the last 24 hours makes my balloon of life stay full even when:
the needle of photos from NBTSC this year are appearing all over my news feed and
the hammer of reading a Balcombe update about the cops getting more aggressive and outrageous than ever now that there are only a few protesters at camp...
The colors from those words and realizations are hitting me, but not bruising.
Last night:
Was in the Shore kitchen with Naomi cooking and talking from 9-midnight. (In talking with her I got a small image of what more than a year from now could look like. Before there was nothing and it as concerning and mysterious.) We made so much good food, all of the produce was 2nds from the farm, and we have great/real conversations. So good! I stayed in the kitchen for another hour finishing up the zucchini burgers and what not.
This morning...
I was at the fountain/mist machine with the crew of Seminar folks, Maia's FYE, and Jim's FYE by 8:30. Where do I start about our experience... (good old bullet points).
-Cozy Farm (Cory and Suzy combined). Suzannah such a strong farmer. Knows what she is doing, is open to learning, is passionate, has a 4 yr old, worlds hard, etc. Saw a lamb about 5 minutes after it was born, saw the mama's placenta, saw the lamb stand up and nurse all naturally within 30 mins. Stood by as Suzy and others provided care for a cow down from exhaustion - who was close to dying. Citcat (Kitcat) was the cows name. She was bloated from too much alfalfa and from stress of needing ot put nutritious in her baby when she was still young herself. When we left her eyes had a completely different glow to them than when we first found her.
-We had sandwiches from Saxipahaw General store. (Which has a free book library, a free plant shelf, and a bike wrack with communal bikes...!). We ate by the river, I played around in the water with Lucas (the 6-7 year old of Steve, someone I see a lot around campus but have only had short conversations), and listened to Suzana talk about sheep/education before farming approach/and mis farm stories.
-Then we went to Peaceful River Farm which was beautiful and good.
Left campus around 8:45 and arrived back just before 6. Wow.
(I finally heard from Jesse, first time since I left the fracking protest which brings up thoughts about letting go combining with give it time... Didn't muddy up the water s of my heart this time.)
Tonight I see my options being: kitchen time (still have lots of amazing produce to use!), Sam's birthday party in Cobb House, Coming Out Ball (dancing!), class assignments, time sensitive logistics... time wil tell what happens.
